Tremors following the recent magnitude 6.9 quake in Cebu and nearby provinces may persist for a week or even a month according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS).

“Base po sa atin pong mga previous data, mga dating mga earthquake events, possible pong week. Pwede rin pong month. Medyo may katagalan pa po,” said Dr. Winchelle Ian G. Sevilla, chief of the Seismological Observation and Earthquake Prediction Division of the PHIVOLCS in a press briefing on 01 October 2025.

[“Based on our previous data, past earthquakes, [these aftershocks] will possibly last for a week. It can also be for a month. It’s still quite long.”]

“Mabuti na nga lang po karamihan po nito ay hindi po natin nararamdaman,” he added.

[“The good thing is that most of these shakes are not felt.”]

PHILVOLCS’s recent aftershocks count following the devastating earthquake logs 2,329 as of 4:00 P.M. today, 02 October 2025.

Sevilla noted that these tremors come round the clock.

Apart from that, he explained that in general, the shake brought about by these aftershocks declines as time passes by, although strong ones still arise regularly.

Currently, the government’s uniformed-personnel units, such as the Philippine Coast Guard and Armed Forces of the Philippines, have deployed aerial and naval vessels to rev up the rescue and relief operations in Cebu.

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority, for its part, deployed an 18-man contingent team yesterday evening to beef up the relief and recovery efforts in earthquake-torn Cebu. Together with the team were K9 dogs trained in locating humans in disaster sites.

As to the funding of the operations, the Department of Budget and Management has called on concerned government agencies to mobilize their quick response funds to defray the costs of said relief initiatives. Among these were the Department of Social Welfare and Development, Department of Public Works and Highways, and Office of Civil Defense.
